The water is usually the bigger job
People are surprised by this. It is a full water damage restoration on top of the fire work. Suppression puts an enormous volume of water into a structure in minutes — it runs down through floors, saturates insulation, and sits in cavities. If it isn't extracted and dried, a house that survived the fire develops mould and structural problems in the weeks afterward. Fire restoration is water restoration plus soot.

Two reasons. Soot is acidic and wiping it dry grinds it into surfaces, turning a cleanable wall into one that needs replacing. And a fire-damaged structure can be unsafe in ways that aren't visible — compromised framing, damaged wiring, and air that still carries combustion particulates. Smoke damage without fire
A furnace puff-back, a kitchen fire that was put out quickly, or a neighbouring unit's fire can leave a building structurally untouched but coated in soot and unliveable from odour. That's still a restoration job — and it's still usually a covered claim.

Do you handle the water from firefighting too?
Yes, and it's usually the larger part of the job. Suppression puts thousands of gallons into a structure. We extract and dry it on the same timeline as any water loss, because the mould clock starts the moment the fire is out.
Can smoke odor really be removed?
Yes, but not by cleaning surfaces alone. Smoke penetrates porous materials, so it needs deodorisation — thermal fogging or hydroxyl treatment — and sometimes sealing of affected framing. Persistent odour after restoration nearly always means something porous was left in place.
Should I clean the soot myself?
No. Soot is acidic and continues etching surfaces, and dry-wiping grinds it in — that turns a cleanable surface into one that must be replaced. Cleaning also has an order, and doing it wrong sets stains permanently.
